Nigeria: Mobile internet subs grew 11% in Q1 2013

Nigeria ended March 2013 with a total of 34.471 million mobile internet subscribers, up 11.4% from 30.939 million three
months earlier. According to figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), South Africa-based MTN Nigeria accounted for the greatest number of mobile data customers (22.725 million, up from 19.732 million at the end of December 2012), followed by Indian-owned Airtel Nigeria (6.154 million, compared to 5.948 million three months earlier) and Etisalat of the UAE (4.932 million, up from 4.455 million).
The regulator meanwhile reported that the country’s fourth active GSM operator, Globacom, saw its total mobile internet customer base decline over the first quarter of 2013, from 802,731 to 659,671.
