Loosers & Company : Nigeria’s ruling party may be coasting home to vacation

Going by the amount of fuel it is burning and the speed and altitude at which the Nigerian national fight is cruising, a general election should, indeed, not be limited to look like a contest between incompetence and anti-corruption. It should be a wholesale examination of the entire play team and a flush-out if need be.

Only one of the seven federal Ministers who resigned recently to contest governorship positions in their states made it to being nominated to contest on PDP ticket. All others were rejected by delegates to the PDP primary elections in a manner that told the men that while they mattered in Abuja, they were not fit for services at home.

Coming from within the PDP system, that verdict must have been representative of performance rating of the Government at the centre in the eyes of members of the ruling party.

With the emergence of Mr Muhammadu Buhari as the opposition’s presidential candidate, the game might just be up for the party that once told the world it would rule Nigeria for sixty years to prepare its handover note.

The landslide victory of Mr Buhari across the APC’s system tells the story that Nigerians are now ready to confront corruption frontally. The slide of Nigeria’s rating in international reckoning in recent years may just see a reversal if Nigerians show, using their votes, that they are tired of corruption, unemployment, mediocre governance and crass incompetence in the federal system.
