The Lagos State Government said it has built a 10.4megawatt power plant Alausa, to replace the 14-MW diesel generator used within the state secretariat, which also houses the seat of government.

The State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Taofiq Tijani, at a press briefing to commemorate the 6th anniversary of Governor Babatunde Fashola’s administration in Lagos, said the Independent Power Plant, IPP, would be commissioned in August this year.

The commissioner explained that the power plant will be powered with natural gas, and would also serve the State Secretariat and its environs.

Tijani noted that the inauguration of the power plant would be the third in the series, as the state had previously opened the 12.15MW Akute Power Plant, and 10MW Island Power Plant serving the state water corporation’s needs and Lagos Island street lights, courts and hospitals respectively.

He further explained that the Lagos Island plant will be expanded to power more government facilities within the locality, which would soon be completed and will replace a 25MW of diesel generator being used in the area.

The commissioner said the State Electricity Board had completed some street lighting projects, while some ongoing ones would be completed before year end.

“The Lagos State Government currently has the most aggressive energy development plan in Nigeria. It is the only state with a dedicated Ministry for Energy Development as well as an agency.

“In the last three years, LASG has successfully commissioned two power plants (Akute and Island Power) and one transformer manufacturing factory. Plans are currently underway to develop more IPPs around the state,” he said.

Tijani reiterated that the ministry is liaising with key stakeholders to promote gas utilisation in the domestic, transportation, industry and power sectors of the state.
