6 dead as shi’ite, Army clash in Zaria

[KADUNA]- Six people have been killed in the ancient northern Nigeria city of Zaria following a clash between soldiers and the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as the Shiite group.

Son of Sheikh Ibrahim El-zakzaky, leader of the group was among five others who were shot dead by the soldiers on Friday.

Members of the shiite group were on a procession to celebrate this year’s Quds day and to also condemn the military operation on Gaza by Israeli forces in Zaria.

While in procession, they passsed a military check point close to the popular PZ roundabout in Zaria, from where a misunderstanding ensued between them and soldiers which resulted in the soldiers firing warning shots.

That however did not deter the protesters and in the process, Mahmud El-Zakzaky, son of the Sheik was hit by a bullet supposedly among shots fired by the Army.

Similarly his younger brother, Ahmad El-Zakzaky was also among many others arrested by the military.

Military authorities have not outrightly confirmed the incident, but a source close to the military says the army is aware but is still studying reports on the situation.

At present, there is confusion and commotion around the PZ area in Zaria, and more soldiers have been drafted to the area.
