Nigerians will soon do without power generating sets – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday in Zungeru, Niger State carried out a ground breaking ceremony of the 700 megawatts Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Plant Project with a vow to develop the power sector to such a level that Nigerians will never again source power through the purchase of generators.

Jonathan restated the commitment of his administration to the development of the sector, saying both the Mambilla and the Gurara hydro power projects would commence before the end of this year.

He thanked the people of Niger State, especially the traditional rulers for being good hosts to three of the nation’s hydro stations in Kainji, Shiroro and Jebba, stressing that the development of the power sector would go a long way in assisting the nation in her drive towards industrial development.

The president said his administration would leave no stone unturned in the attainment of 10,000 megawatts of electricity before the end of this year.
Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu, in his address thanked the President for finding time to personally grace the occasion, promising that the people of Zungeru would protect not only the facilities at the site but also the personnel working at the site. He assured that the people of Niger State would continue to support the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in order to enjoy more of the administration’s dividends of democracy.

Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo was full of praises for President Jonathan over his drive to improve power in Nigeria. The Zungeru project, he said would cost over $100 million and was to be completed in four years. The president, on the occasion awarded three traditional titles of Dan Haske of Kagara, Jagaba of Minna and Maiyaki of Kontagora.
