Microsoft Working on Windows 8 Based Surface Tablet

Microsoft is reportedly working on a tablet sized device that would run on its Windows 8 based operating system.
The Wall Street Journal wrote that Microsoft is developing a fresh range of its Surface tablets, including a 7-inch screen version that is expected to go into mass production later this year.
The company sparks rumours of a smaller Surface tablet just last week when it reduced the minimum screen size resolution that would be supported by the OS, although that modification was still too large for a 7-inch tablet.
One person familiar with Microsoft’s product plans told the WSJ that the 7-inch tablets weren’t part of the company’s strategy last year, but Microsoft executives realized they needed a response to the rapidly growing popularity of smaller tablets.
The move may also been seen as a reaction to Nokia’s decision last year to drop plans for its own range of tablet devices, reputedly due to sluggish sales of the Windows 8 software.
Microsoft is also claimed to be continuing to test its own smartphone, although it isn’t clear whether it will bring such a device to market, component suppliers have said.
