Kano State Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Sanusi Abdulrasheed, yesterday said over 89 percent of youth corps members nationwide can neither write nor communicate effectively in English language.

Abdulrasheed, who made the observation at the passing out parade of corps members in Kano yesterday, said they prefer to communicate in ‘broken’ English, just as he advised fresh graduates that the era of white collar jobs in Nigeria is over.Also, he disclosed that the identified laxities were reflected through a research undertaken nationwide by the NYSC management.

According to him, “I have been asked to remind you, and I don’t want you to feel insulted.But it is a statement of fact that the management throughout the entire federation made an observation that the bulk of NYSC members were not communicating effectively in English language.

Following the nationwide research conducted it was established that 89 per cent of them cannot write good application, which is the basic fact.

The research, according to the coordinator, indicated that “majority of you start writing application with their name, like ‘I Sanusi Abdulrasheed hereby,’ adding that this idea is zero.

“You should know that the point of communicating to the world is through application. And when you start on a bad note, those, who appreciate the use of languages, would discover that you lack communication skills, while such an application would end up in the dust bin.”

He therefore urged the corps members not to feel too big, “Go and buy primary and secondary (school) books, therein you would learn and study numerous ways of writing good application.”

Abdulrasheed added that a good application starts with “I hereby wish to apply for accounting position in your organisation,” as an example.

Also, he advised them to forget searching for white collar jobs, as according to him, it is better to utilise huge amount of vocational skills learnt during the orientation and put them to practice to become self-employed.
Commenting on the prevailing securitychallenges in the state, Abdulrasheed said, “thank Allah, the level of security challenges has improved tremendously.”

He also commended both federal and state governments for their efforts in ensuring the security of lives and property in Nigeria.
“Let us thank Allah for the way He has been using our government, both the state and Federal Government in confronting security challenges in Kano, with what is on ground.

I can assure any new corps member not to entertain fear in serving in the state (Kano), though we all believe that only God can guarantee adequate protection of lives and property. We, human beings, can only do little.”
